The earliest forms of business cards or “visiting cards” were indeed playing cards. Visitors wrote on the cards their signatures, promissory notes and other messages. As time went on, these visiting cards further developed into greeting and other cards and business cards. First introduced in France in the 17th century. Now in the 21st century they have not changed except for size and the elaborate full color images that can be printed in such a confined surface of flat space.
